Morphemes

Morphemes are the smallest unit of language where meaning can be made and as students advance in their schooling, up to 80% of the words encountered in text will consist of morphologically complex words. Learning the meaning of different word parts can help students figure out the meaning of new words. Supporting students' morphological knowledge can support their decoding, phonological awareness, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension abilities and has strong impacts for students with language-based disabilities and English Language Learners.
