Grammar
Grammar is best understood as a set of choices for creating meaning rather than a set of rules to follow and is best learned through analysis of authentic contexts (including students’ own writing) (Myhill, 2021). Students benefit from opportunities to actively manipulate and combine sentence patterns through contextualized practice, which develops both their metalinguistic awareness and writing skills (Saddler, 2012; Telesca et al., 2020). This approach stands in contrast to traditional decontextualized grammar instruction, which research has shown to be ineffective or even detrimental to writing quality (Graham & Harris, 2017).
